Graduate Financial Aid
Most incoming graduate students are fully or mostly supported by fellowships and instructorships by Indiana University. Stipends vary from year to year. In 2015-16 we awarded a combination of assistant instructorships and fellowships by the Institute of German Studies, or other fellowships, amounting to approximately $20,000 for each of the first five years. These awards also include fee remissions and health insurance. The large majority of our financial offers are multi-year packages that cover the entire period of study of our students, from the first year until the Ph.D. is awarded (when needed beyond seven years, as long as progress is adequate). The fellowship support is partly made possible through the Institute of German Studies which may award up to five Max Kade Fellowships to incoming graduate students annually. Applicants to our programs are automatically considered for the prestigious Max Kade Fellowships.
