A letter from the chair

On April 25 2025, the Department of Germanic Studies celebrated its 140th anniversary. The festivities in the Grand Hall of Maxwell Hall began with a lecture by our alumna Olivia Landry at Virginia Commonwealth University on "A Cancelled Lesson in Plurality: Hannah Arendt and Contemporary German Theater.” It was a delight to welcome back former faculty members such as our long-term chair Bill Rasch, Troy Byler as well as alumni of our graduate program Anita Lukic, Chris Chiasson, Wendy Westphal, and Andrew Kostakis. It was an important moment to reflect on our legacy and to celebrate the achievements of our faculty and students.
