Topic: Reading goethe's *faust*
Reading Goethe's *Faust* In this course, we will try to wrap our minds around one text, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's *Faust*, and only its first part. This is *the* classic of German literature, but that need not intimidate us. We want to understand how the many themes coursing through this play -- ambition, pride, science, evil, love, infanticide -- weave together. We will take things slowly, read the work together in class, and watch videos of celebrated performances. Readings and discussions in German. Required text: J.W. Goethe, Faust. Der Tragödie Erster Teil. Textausgabe mit Kommentar und Materialien: Reclam XL (Reclam, ISBN: 978-3150161036)
