Our department offers a minor and a certificate in Dutch Studies, as well as a Certificate of Dutch as a Foreign Language.
Minor & Certificates
Minor in Dutch Studies
The minor in Dutch Studies focuses on Dutch language, literatures, and cultures. It allows students to achieve proficiency in Dutch while exploring advanced topics in the literatures, media, intellectual histories, and societies of Dutch-speaking regions, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles, French Flanders, South Africa, and Indonesia. The minor can serve as preparation for study abroad or to supplement a global career in the diverse areas of Dutch influence.
Certificate in Dutch Studies
The certificate in Dutch Studies provides an opportunity for advanced study in the language, culture, art, politics, economics, and society of the Dutch-speaking world. It offers a distinctive path to careers abroad from the European Union to South Africa to Indonesia, along with humanistic engagement with one of the great global cultures.
Certificate of Dutch as a Foreign Language
Indiana University offers students the opportunity to take three of the available exams for the Certificate of Dutch as a Foreign Language; these constitute an international examination program through which a student's standing in Dutch is certified. The three exams are the PMT, the PTHO and the PAT.
These exams are administered by only a few institutions in the United States. The director of the Dutch program at Indiana University offers preparation for the tests, which are administered on the Indiana University campus. The exam takes place in the first week of May, and an application must be completed by March 1.
