The option of a Ph.D. in Germanic Linguistics and Philology offers advanced students rigorous training in linguistic theory, with emphases on German phonology, morphology, syntax, and language change. The option also provides a systematic and comparative study of the older Germanic languages Gothic—Old and Middle High German, Old Saxon, Old Norse—along with their literatures and cultures. (Note that beginning in 2026, the degree will be called "Ph.D. in Languages, Literatures & Cultures" with a track in Germanic linguistics and philology.)
