Topic: City in ger thought & practic
Topic: The City in German Thought and Practice The city as a place, real or fictional, and city life have been central to the development of German modern thought about mobility, pluralism, temporality, strangeness, atmosphere, the public and the economy. In the first part of the course we will discuss modern urban life in the writing of Walther Benjamin, Martina Löw, and Georg Simmel, among others. The second part of the course investigates topics, sites and events which take place in the city. We will read stories and essays by Esther Dischereit, Jenny Erpenbeck, and Andreas Huyssen, among others, to discuss the city square; colonial heritage, East German cities, migration, monuments and public art. We will visit the Eskenazi Museum of Art and discuss Drawings of German Expressionism that depict city life.
