Topic: Introduction to Old Icelandic / Old Norse language and literature. During the semester, we will focus on excerpts of sagas, which will be read/translated in class (including the accompanying skaldic stanzas in Hallfreðar saga). Special attention will be paid to linguistic peculiarities. The course will contain lectures on Old Norse language and literature (sagas, poetry). Near the end of the semester, we will read some poetry and runic inscriptions. A final paper is required on a topic in Old Norse linguistics or literature. Students will give several short oral presentations throughout the semester.
