Course Description

Topic: Introduction to Old Norse-Icelandic Literature Medieval Icelandic poetic and prose literary texts: history of the literature. During the semester, we will focus on one saga (Hallfreðar saga) and one eddic poem (V¿luspá) which will be read/translated in class (including the accompanying skaldic stanzas in Hallfreðar saga). Special attention will be paid to linguistic peculiarities. The course will contain lectures on Old Norse literature (sagas, poetry). There will be no exams, but a final paper is required (topics to be negotiated). Students will be expected to give an oral presentation of their papers (ca. 20 minutes) at the end of the semester. Prerequisite: G635 or the equivalent.
