Greetings from Bloomington!

Despite hurricane Helene, Hoosiers old and current have successfully gathered at a tropical-themed fusion restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia during this year’s GSA. As someone who attended a small college and even smaller high school, this reunion of people who occupied the same place at different points in time was quite exciting.

So, I am happy to be the bearer of good news for the good people in this department. Reflecting back on the year, I am proud to be a part of this department. Our work occupies many different academic spaces and represents vibrant interests and disciplines. You can read about all the faculty, student and alumni achievements in this newsletter.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Nikole Langjahr, our undergraduate German club flourishes with Stammtisch, game nights, pizza party, and Nikolausfeier coming up soon. If you walk by our department, you can hear conversations in multiple languages – German, Norwegian, Dutch, Yiddish, English, and sometimes languages no longer spoken. The department also organized many successful events in the past year, from German Film & Theater Project, Germanic Linguistics Annual Conference, to the workshop with University of Vienna. They are all a reminder that we continue to foster a diverse intellectual community here.
