This course introduces you to the history of the German language, from its Indo-European roots to all of the varieties used in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland today. You¿ll learn about the major linguistic changes that separate the Germanic languages from other languages of Europe, that make German distinct from the other Germanic languages, and that characterize Modern Standard German as opposed to various German dialects. These changes will be put into the historical, social, and cultural contexts that shaped the language, with each stage represented by a typical work of literature. No background in linguistics is required. The course will be taught in German and readings are in German. Textbook: Stedje, Astrid. 2007. Deutsche Sprache gestern und heute. 6th ed. UTB.
