Topic: The city contemporary germany
The City in Contemporary Germany There is no better place to learn about and examine Germany as a plural democracy than the German city. We will discuss the topics of city life and art, economic and social mobility, gentrification, political organizing, colonial and Nazi heritage, and their memorialization. We will read works by German authors of the 20th and 21st century such as Walter Benjamin, Jenny Erpenbeck, and Georg Simmel among others, who discuss life in the city, modern architecture, East German cities, and monuments. We will visit the Eskenazi Museum of Art and discuss drawings of German Expressionist artists that depict city life. Assignments will include participation in classroom and canvas discussions, group research, short podcast, and presentation.
