It's Complicated Everyone knows that love is complicated. If you have loved, you know the joy and the suffering, and it seems there isn't more to say. Yet our hunger for stories about love is insatiable. Maybe poets and artists know something about it -- about its euphoria and its misery -- that the rest of us don't, or don't know quite that way. In this course, we encounter romantic love of every stripe: tender, possessive, unrequited, blissful, cruel. We seek to understand how it differs from other kinds of love (love of family, nation, pet, God, and so on). We let novels and poems show us how social life can form, and deform, love. How is this emotion, which feels so intimate, entangled in history and politics? Readings and discussions in German.
