Seminar (SEM)
- Topic: Kant¿s Critique of Judgment
Kant¿s Critique of Judgment The main task of this seminar is to read Immanuel Kant¿s Kritik der Urteilskraft (Critique of Judgment, 1790) with an eye to what it can teach literary scholars today. The text is difficult, wide ranging, puzzling, and at times frustrating. Yet it repays close study, not merely because it is one of the most influential works of aesthetic theory, but because the core questions it engages turn out to be very much alive. Our focus will be a close reading of the text, but we will consult critical reflections as needed. The seminar will be conducted in English. Where possible, students should read the book in German. Immanuel Kant, Kritik der Urteilskraft, ed. Heiner Klemme (Felix Meiner, ISBN-13: 978-3787317752). Immanuel Kant, Critique of the Power of Judgment, translated by Paul Guyer and Eric Matthews (Cambridge UP, ISBN-13: 978-0521348928).
