This course offers an introduction to phonetics, phonology, and German pronunciation. The overlapping focus of the course includes general phonetics/phonology, German-specific phonology, and German pronunciation. By the end of this course, you will be able to: 1. produce and read transcriptions in the Internation Phonetic Alphabet. 2. demonstrate underpinnings of phonetic analysis. 3. analyze languages with respect to allophones and phonemes. 4. analyze German phonology, with special attention to phenomena such as final fortition and the pronunciation of "ch" and "r" in German. 5. use the above skills to improve your German pronunciation.
