Course Description

Topic: Vikings and Sagas Who were the Vikings? Do the images of the Vikings in your head match up with the facts, and is their portrayal in present popular culture at all rooted in reality? This course is designed to answer these and other questions regarding the history, literature, language, and culture of the Vikings. The sagas serve as the primary source and perhaps most important tool in answering these questions. In addition to reading two full sagas, each representing a different genre, we will look at a number of excerpts from other sagas and turn to historical data and archeological evidence in order to fill in gaps, corroborate the tales, and debunk myths. In the end, you will be able to wield the tools to separate fact from fiction and sail your way to a more rigorous understanding of the Vikings.
