The German Online Placement Exam, administered by Indiana University Bloomington Evaluation Services and Testing (BEST), is for placement purposes only. While your score does not fulfill any requirement, it is used to help you find the most appropriate level course. All incoming freshmen and transfer students who have previous German experience are required to take the exam prior to arriving at orientation.

If you are a transfer student wishing to pursue a German minor or major and you place lower than you did in previous coursework, you may be advised to retake equivalent coursework at Indiana University.
